Summer Opportunities Abroad Program
First year students are eligible to apply for a SOAP fellowship for an international medical experience during the summer between their first and second years. SOAPs range from $3300-$3500 each year. Students must complete an application with a description of the project they intend to complete as well as an essay outlining their goals for the summer in order to be considered. An additional stipend is available through the Dean's Office if students engage in research internationally (students are eligible for half of the normal Dean's Funds grant for research conducted outside of Washington University). This funding can be used towards travel and living expenses to any country which is not on the U.S. State Department's travel warnings list. In 2017, the FIHTM Committee awarded 6 fellowships, although funding and the number of applications can vary slightly each year.
